State Boys Basketball: Minnehaha, North Woods Back in Championship Games

Minnehaha Academy defeated Lake City 82-52 to advance to the Class AA title game for the third straight year. The Redhawks (28-2) won back-to-back titles and are hoping to win their third straight championship before moving up to Class AAA next season.

The Redhawks jumped out to a 35-15 lead at 5:26 left in the first half and led 43-24 at halftime. Junior standout Jalen Suggs had 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists and sophomore center Chet Holmgren added 23 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Prince Aligbe added 15 points and junior Kaden Johnson scored 14 points.

Junior guard Reid Gastner led Lake City with 21 points.

The Redhawks will play for their third consecutive and fourth overall championship when they face Minneapolis North Saturday at 1 p.m.

Second seed Minneapolis North, which came close to shutting their doors a few years ago, advanced to the Class AA state title game with a 62-46 win over third seed Perham. The Polars won the 2016 and 2017 Class A titles before moving up to Class AA.

Minneapolis North jumped out to a 21-4 lead with 7:52 left in the first half, led 31-15 at halftime and were up by at least 12 points the entire second half.

The Polars had a balanced attack with four double figure scorers. Senior guard Nasir El-Amin had 13 points and sophomore center Davon Townley Jr. added 12 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Willie Wilson chipped in with 11 points and senior guard Eli Campbell had 10.

The Yellowjackets shot just 6 of 20 (30 percent) from the field and made just one 3-pointer in the first half. They shot 48.1 percent in the second half, but could never recover from the 16-point halftime deficit.

The Polars outrebounded Perham (30-2) 35-28. The Yellowjackets will face Lake City in the third place game at Concordia University.

Class A Semi-Final: Henning 67, Spring Grove 34

Fourth seed Henning knocked off Spring Grove 67-34 to advance to the Class A title game.

Henning used a 23-6 run to expand a 14-10 lead to a 37-16 halftime margin and were never seriously challenged in the second half.

Henning (30-1) was led by senior Sam Fisher and junior Parker Fraki with 15 points each. Junior Isaac Fisher added 14 points and senior Adam Lange chipped in with 10 points.

Spring Grove (24-5), which upset top-seeded Springfield in the quarterfinals, was led by sophomore Caden Grinde’s 11 points.

Class A Semi-Final: North Woods 57, Ada-Borup 55

Third seed North Woods advanced to the Class A title game for the third straight year with a 57-55 win over second seed Ada-Borup as Cade Goggleye sank a 3-pointer from the deep right corner with 0.4 seconds left.

Junior forward Trevor Morrison led the Grizzlies with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Goggleye added 18 points and six assists.

Mason Miller led Ada-Borup with 18 points as he made 9 of 12 shots from the field. Jared Brainard had 15 points and six assists.
