While it may be MACtion where anything can happen, I’m just not understanding why I can get an undervalued and underappreciated Eastern Michigan team at this price. The Eagles are a sneaky good team, especially on defense, and in particular against the pass. That will give them a big edge in this game against an Akron squad with no run game and no desire to have one.
The Zips have the second-fewest rushing yards per game in the country, so their one-dimensional offense will continue to struggle against an underrated Eastern secondary. And on the other side, Akron gives up the 17th-most total yards in the country thanks to their terrible tackling. Eastern has a very plodding offense that lacks explosiveness, but they should get it done against one of the weaker defenses in the country. The Zips simply do not find ways to win, so going against them on a pick-em price here is a strong bet, in my opinion.
Ball State @ Toledo (-5.5): 7:00 PM CT on ESPN
The line on this game has continued to attract money for Ball State, driving it down almost 3 points from the open. But getting another 6 points on top of that move with a teaser makes it easy for me to back Toledo here. The Rockets boast the most explosive offense in the conference, and the most balanced as well. That balance should help them gash a Cardinals defense that’s particularly vulnerable on the ground.
But I’m really not understanding the love for Ball State here in general. The Cardinals have benefited from playing only the MAC bottom-feeders, and this game should be a shock to their system. Toledo has been especially strong at home, averaging 45.5 PPG at the Glass Bowl this season. Their offense should be at full speed tonight, racking up plenty of yards and points against a Ball State defense that has built up its metrics against a soft schedule. Only needing Toledo by a touchdown here is good value for a team with a plus-11.6 average margin in MAC games.
